Background Information
The Centre for African Bio-Entrepreneurship (CABE) is an established International Non Governmental Organization (NGO) that focuses on knowledge sharing and seeks to improve the livelihoods of African smallholder farmers, women and youth. CABE was founded in September 2003 in the Netherlands and formally registered in Kenya in 2004 under the NGO Coordinating Act of 1990.
The aim of CABE is to improve the economic welfare of the farming community in the rural, urban and peri-urban areas. The organization targets growth-oriented women and youth agri-prenuers that require improved inputs and market for their products and services.
The specific objectives of CABE in promoting agri-preneurs include:
- Capacity building and training
- Market linkages
- Access to improved inputs
- Access to extension and financial services
CABE prides itself as experts in conducting policy research and analysis. The organization has hosted the East African regional hub of two UK Department of International Development (DFID)-funded programs namely: Future Agricultures Consortium (FAC) and now hosting Agricultural Policy Research in Africa (APRA). It has contributed to policy studies under the auspices of: Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in East and Central Africa (ASARECA), Africa Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS), International Food Policy Research (IFPRI) and Institute of Development Studies/ STEPS Centre among others. CABE has participated in several policy engagement forums and also published articles and reports.
The organization has a consultancy wing, (CABE Africa Limited) which is involved in consultancies with experience in baseline studies, feasibility studies, capacity building and training, monitoring and evaluations, and policy analysis and advisory services. Some of the CABE clients in these consultancy assignments include; Techno Serve Kenya, Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), African Centre for Economic Transformation (ACET) and World Bank (WB) among others.
